Pufferfish are passive mobs that spawn in rivers and oceans. When killed, they will drop 1 pufferfish, and 1-3 experience if they were killed by a player or a tamed wolf. (Pufferfish can also be acquired while fishing.) In Java Edition, there is a 5% chance that they will drop 1 bone meal. In Bedrock Edition, there is a 25% chance of them dropping up to 2 bones. When eaten, pufferfish will inflict the player with Hunger III for 15 seconds, and Poison II for 10 seconds. The player will also be inflicted with 15 seconds of Nausea I on Java Edition, or 15 seconds of Nausea II on Bedrock Edition.

When pufferfish are approached by a mob or the player, they will puff themselves up, inflicting a small amount of damage and a small amount of poison to any mobs or players within its radius. In Peaceful Difficulty on Java Edition, they will not be able to hurt the player in this way.

Pufferfish can be picked up with a water bucket, which will give the player a bucket of pufferfish. When out of water for long enough, they will start to suffocate and eventually die. Axolotls will attack them on sight.
