Vindicators are hostile mobs armed with iron axes that will spawn in woodland mansions and during illager raids, and are a type of illager. When killed, they will drop 0-1 emeralds, and 5 experience if they were killed by a player or a tamed wolf, as well as additional 1-3 experience per naturally spawned equipment. There is also an 8.5% chance of them dropping their axe, and if they spawned as a raid captain, they will drop an ominous banner (illager banner on Bedrock Edition). In Bedrock Edition, if a vindicator spawned as part of a raid, they also have a chance to drop 0-5 emeralds, iron gear, and even enchanted books.
Vindicators are hostile toward players, iron golems, adult villagers, wandering traders, and, on Bedrock Edition, snow golems. While a vindicator is idle, they will stand with their arms crossed, much like a villager. However, when they detect a target, they will brandish an iron axe and sprint toward it. If the vindicator does not have a weapon, they will hold up both their hands instead, similar to a zombie. Like a pillager's crossbow, the vindicator's axe can break if used enough.
A vindicator's axe can stun the player's shield for 5 seconds, during which they can inflict heavy damage if the player does not retreat. On Normal and Hard difficulty, vindicators spawned as part of a raid can break down doors, much like zombies in Hard difficulty.
If a vindicator is named "Johnny" using a name tag, it will attack virtually everything, except for evokers, pillagers, other vindicators, zoglins, and ghasts. In Bedrock Edition they will also not attack ravagers, and in Java Edition they will also not attack baby villagers or illusioners. All hostile and neutral mobs attacked by a Johnny vindicator will retaliate, except for endermites, elder guardians, phantoms, guardians, goats, slimes, magma cubes, ravagers, and the ender dragon.
