Silverfish are hostile mobs that only spawn from stronghold silverfish spawners and when an infested block is broken without using Silk Touch. Infested blocks can be found underground in mountains and windswept hills, and in strongholds, igloo basements, and sometimes in woodland mansions. Silverfish can even create infested blocks by burrowing into a stone or stone brick block. When killed, they will drop 5 experience if they were killed by a player or a tamed wolf.

If silverfish are not killed in one hit, they will summon more silverfish from nearby infested blocks. Silverfish will also attack iron golems and snow golems.
