Pillagers are found spawning around pillager outposts, in patrols, and during illager raids. When killed, they will drop 5 experience if they were killed by a player or a tamed wolf. A pillager captain will also drop an ominous banner (Java Edition) or illager banner (Bedrock Edition) and an ominous bottle with a random level of Bad Omen, ranging from 1 through 5. They also have an 8.5% chance of dropping their crossbow. In Bedrock Edition, they will also drop 0-2 arrows, and pillagers spawned as part of raids have the potential to drop emeralds, enchanted books, and iron gear.
Pillagers are classified as illagers. Other illager mobs include evokers and vindicators.
Pillagers are hostile toward iron golems, wandering traders, and adult villagers, as well as the player. They will shoot their crossbow only if they are up to eight blocks away from their target, and will pursue enemies for up to 64 blocks on Java Edition and up to 16 on Bedrock Edition. On Bedrock Edition, pillagers will resort to a melee attack if they are underwater instead of using their crossbow.
Pillagers have the chance to start spawning in patrols after 5.5 in-game days, showing up in groups of 1-5 in Java Edition or 2-5 on Bedrock Edition, 24-48 blocks away from a random player. Pillagers spawned as part of a patrol are neutral toward the player, but if the player gets within ten blocks of them or attacks them from range, they will become hostile. Pillager patrols are always led by a patrol captain, a pillager wearing a banner.
