Spiders are found spawning in all Overworld biomes (except Mushroom Fields and the Deep Dark) at light levels of 0. Spiders will attack the player on sight by pouncing on them, and have the ability to climb walls. When killed, they will drop 0-2 string, and 5 experience if they were killed by a player or a tamed wolf. There is also a 1/3 chance for it to drop a spider eye if they were killed by a player.

When spiders are exposed to sunlight, they will be passive to the player. If they are attacked or encountered in darker areas, they will act hostile to the player. They will also attack iron golems if the light level is low enough.

In Hard difficulty on Java Edition, spiders occasionally spawn with one of four status effects: Speed, Strength, Regeneration, or Invisibility. If a spider spawns with Invisibility, it will be mainly invisible, but its eyes will still be visible.

Spiders are also immune to the Poison status affect.

Spider Variants

There is a 1% chance of a spider spawning with a skeleton riding it, forming a spider jockey. In some snowy biomes, a spider has a 0.8% chance to spawn a stray on its back, forming a stray jockey.

Cave spiders are a poisonous variant of regular spiders, spawned only by cave spider spawners in abandoned mineshafts. They are also smaller than the regular spider.
