Turtle

Passive Mob
Health Points: 30

Turtles are passive mobs that will spawn on regular beaches but not on the snowy or stony shore variants. When killed, they will drop 0-2 seagrass, and 1-3 experience if they were killed by a player or a tamed wolf. If they are killed by lightning, they will drop a bowl. Baby turtles do not drop anything.

Turtles will follow a player holding seagrass within a 10-block radius, and if two turtle are fed seagrass by the player, they will enter love mode and breed, and the player will be rewarded with 1-7 experience. Unlike other mobs, a baby turtle will not be produced right away. Instead, one of the turtles becomes pregnant. The pregnant turtle will then try to return to its home beach (the beach where it spawned), and once it arrives there, it will appear to be digging in the sand for several seconds, and then it will lay a batch of 1-4 turtle eggs.

In Java Edition, the turtle that laid eggs will re-enter love mode for 30 seconds, and the turtle that had been bred with it will be available for more breeding directly after it finishes breeding. In Bedrock Edition, those turtles will not be able to enter love mode again for 90 seconds.

Turtle eggs will crack over time, cracking fastest during the night, and they will hatch after they have cracked three times, producing a baby turtle. It will take 20 minutes for the baby turtle to grow into an adult. The growth process can also be sped up by feeding the baby turtle seagrass.

When the baby turtle grows up, it will drop an item called a scute. Five scutes can be crafted into a turtle shell helmet, which, when worn underwater, will grant the player 10 seconds of water breathing. Turtle eggs can only be acquired with the Silk Touch enchantment. When a player or mob walks or jumps on turtle eggs, they will break. Only turtles can safely walk on turtle eggs.

Turtles will be targeted by a number of mobs, including undead mobs, stray cats, wild wolves, wild ocelots, and foxes. Turtles eggs will be targeted by undead mobs, who will pathfind toward the eggs and jump up and down on them until they break.
