Wither skeletons are hostile mobs that spawn in Nether fortresses. On Bedrock Edition, the wither spawns 3-4 wither skeletons when it is below half health. In Java Edition on Halloween, wither skeletons have a chance of spawning wearing either a carved pumpkin (22.5%) or a jack-o-lantern (2.5%), which won't be dropped if they are killed. When killed they will drop 0-1 coal, 0-2 bones, and if they were killed by the player, they have a 2.5% chance to drop a wither skeleton skull. If they were killed by a player or a tamed wolf, they will drop 5 experience, plus an additional 1-3 experience if they didn't drop their sword. A wither skeleton will always drop a wither skeleton skull if it is killed by a charged creeper.

Wither skeletons are hostile toward players, snow golems, iron golems, baby turtles, piglins, and piglin brutes. They will flee from wolves, but if they are hit by them they will retaliate. A mob or player that is damaged by a wither skeleton will also be inflicted with the Wither effect for 10 seconds, which will cause one point of damage every two seconds, similar to the Poison effect. However, unlike Poison, which will only ever drain the health bar down to one point of health, the Wither effect can bring it down to zero and cause death. Wither skeletons are immune to fire, lava, and the Wither effect.
