Llamas are neutral mobs that will spawn in savanna plateaus and windswept hills, and savannas and windswept savannas on Bedrock Edition. Two leashed trader llamas will spawn with wandering traders. When killed, llamas will drop 0-2 leather, and 1-3 experience if they were killed by a player or a tamed wolf. Baby llamas will not drop anything.

If a mob or player attacks a llama, the llama will spit at them, dealing a small amount of damage. A wandering trader's llamas will also spit at any mob that attacks their trader. Llamas are hostile toward wolves, and will spit without provocation, but they don't attack tamed wolves unless provoked. Wolves flee from llamas with strengths of 4 or 5, and flee from weaker llamas less often. Trader llamas are hostile toward all zombie variants and, on Java Edition, illagers.

Llamas can be tamed by the player. Clicking Use on the llama with an empty hand will allow them to mount it. The llama may then throw them off. After a certain amount of tries, heart particles will appear and the player will stay on the llama. The taming process can be sped up by feeding the llamas wheat or hay bales.

Llamas cannot accept saddles, so the player won't be able to control their movement, even when they are tamed. The player will instead have to use a lead to drag them around, and leashing a llama signals other llamas to form up behind the leashed llama in a caravan of up to 10 llamas.

Using a chest on a llama will equip the chest on them, and when the llama's GUI is opened by sneaking and clicking Use on them, items can be stored in the slots available. The number of slots available (3, 6, 9, 12, or 15) depends on the llama's strength (1, 2, 3, 4, or 5). The llama's strength multiplied by 3 is the amount of slots it will have when equipped with a chest. The chances of a wild llama having a strength of 1, 2, or 3 is 32.8%, and the chances of them having a strength of 4 or 5 is 0.8%.

Llamas can also be equipped with carpet, and each different color of carpet will display as a unique colored rug on their backs. If a trader llama is equipped with a carpet, it will replace but not remove its default rug.

If the player feeds two tamed llamas hay bales, they will enter love mode and breed, and the player will be rewarded with 1-7 experience. Those llamas will then not be able to enter love mode again for 5 minutes. It will take 20 minutes for the baby llama to grow into an adult. The growth process can also be sped up by feeding the baby llama wheat of hay bales. If two trader llamas are bred, the offspring will wear a rug.
