Axolotls are passive mobs that only spawn underwater in lush caves. Their are five different colors of axolotl: pink, brown, gold, cyan, and blue. When breeding axolotls, there is a 1 in 1200 (0.083%) chance of the baby axolotl being blue, leaving a 1199 in 1200 (99.917%) chance that the baby's will match that of one of its parents (including blue parents). Blue axolotls do not spawn naturally, and can only be acquired through breeding.

Axolotls will attack all aquatic mobs except for turtles, dolphins, and frogs. They also attack the drowned. After they kill a non-hostile mob, there is a 2-minute cooldown time before they can kill another non-hostile mob. If an axolotl takes damage underwater, there is a chance that it will play dead for 10 seconds to regenerate health. Hostile mobs will not attack axolotls that are playing dead.

If a player kills a mob that at least one axolotl is in combat with, they will give the player 5 seconds of Regeneration I per axolotl in the fight (capped at a total of 2 minutes in Java Edition), and will also remove the effect Mining Fatigue if the player has it.

Axolotls will die if they are out of water for 5 minutes. They will not die on land in rain or in a thunderstorm.

Axolotls can be picked up in a water bucket, which will give the player a bucket of axolotl. Doing this will prevent them from despawning when they are put down again.

Axolotls can be bred with buckets of tropical fish, which will reward the player with 1-7 experience. In Java Edition, they will not be able to breed again for 5 minutes. In Bedrock Edition, it is only 1 minute. It will take 20 minutes for the baby axolotl to grow into an adult. The growth process can also be sped up by feeding the baby axolotl buckets of tropical fish.
