Sniffers are passive mobs that can only be spawned using sniffer eggs, which are occasionally found in the suspicious sand of warm ocean ruins. When killed, they will drop 1-3 experience if they were killed by a player or a tamed wolf.

Sniffers have the ability to sniff out the seeds of ancient plants. Once they have detected one, they "sploot" and use their noses to dig it up and drop it as an item. There are two different items that sniffers can dig up: torchflower seeds and pitcher pods. Both of them can be planted on farmland and will gradually grow into beautiful flowers. Sniffers can only dig seeds out of dirt and dirt variants, moss blocks, and mud. A sniffer will remember each location it sploots at, and will not dig there again until it has dug at another 20 locations, which is why it is important to make sure that sniffers have plenty of room to wander. Once a sniffer has dug up a seed, there is an eight minute cooldown before it can dig again.

Sniffers can be bred using torchflower seeds, which will reward the player with 1-7 experience. Once the sniffers are finished breeding, one of them will drop a sniffer egg. Sniffer eggs, once planted, take 20 minutes to hatch. If they are planted on a moss block, it will only take 10 minutes. Once hatched, the baby sniffer (called a snifflet) will take 40 minutes to grow up. The growth process can also be sped up by feeding the snifflet torchflower seeds.
