Foxes are passive mobs found spawning in taigas, old growth taigas, snowy taigas, and mountain groves. Foxes that spawn in a snowy biome spawn as white arctic foxes. When killed, foxes will drop 1-2 experience on Java Edition or 1-3 experience on Bedrock Edition if they were killed by a player or a tamed wolf. They will also drop any item they are carrying in their mouth. Baby foxes will not drop anything.

Foxes will stay away from wolves, polar bears, and players. Wolves and polar bears will attack foxes within a certain radius. Foxes will attack chickens, rabbits, baby turtles, cod, salmon, and tropical fish. Red foxes prefer to attack chickens, rabbits, or baby turtles over cod, salmon, or tropical fish, and arctic foxes prefer to attack cod, salmon, or tropical fish over chickens, rabbits, or baby turtles. Unlike players and other mobs, foxes can move through sweet berry bushes without taking damage or reduced speed.

A feature of foxes that makes them unique to other mobs is the fact that they can hold items in their mouth. Any items dropped on the ground will be picked up by the fox and stored in their mouth. Any food they have picked up (except for cake) will get eaten after 30 seconds, and if they come across a food item, they will throw out any item they already have in their mouth to pick up the food. Any effects that the food would give to the player (such as poison from spider eyes) will also apply to the fox, and if it eats a stew, an empty bowl will be dropped. Any tools or weapons it is holding (such as a pickaxe or sword) will affect its attack strength.

Foxes can also spawn with an item already in its mouth, the possible items being an emerald, a rabbit's foot, rabbit hide, an egg, leather, wheat, or a feather.

During the day, if a thunderstorm is not occurring, foxes will seek out a shaded area to sleep. They will sleep by curling up, and will emit small snoring noises. They will wake up if approached by a player or mob, and will still pick up items. Foxes will also sit down occasionally, if they can't find a shaded area to sleep.

Foxes can be bred with sweet berries or glow berries, and will produce a baby fox that will trust the player. Foxes that trust the player will not run from them, but will not follow them like tamed cats or wolves. The trusting fox will attack certain mobs if they attack the player, but will not attack mobs that the player attacks. Trusting foxes will retreat from polar bears and wolves, but not tamed wolves.
